The Abbasid Caliphate witnessed several popular revolts that challenged the stability of the ruling dynasty. The Zanj Rebellion of 869-883 CE was a notable uprising led by African slaves who worked on plantations in southern Iraq. The revolt erupted due to the oppressive conditions and harsh treatment that the slaves endured under their Arab masters. The rebels captured several cities and established their own ruler and administration. Although the Abbasid forces eventually crushed the rebellion, it highlighted the plight of African slaves and the fragility of the ruling dynasty. Other popular uprisings, such as the Qarmatian revolt and the Shi’ite uprising, also challenged Abbasid rule and contributed to its eventual decline.
